Ex-cop in NSW steals family gold, gambles with money

A former New South Wales (NSW) police officer is under investigation for serious misconduct.

The 32-year-old man is suspected of stealing gold bars worth AU$1.36 million.

He allegedly stole the gold from under his mother’s house.

The gold belonged to his uncle, the brother of his late father.

Between February 2021 and December 2022, the man sold a dozen gold bars to bullion dealers.

He reportedly received AU$780,991 for seven bars sold in 2021.

In 2022, he sold five more bars for AU$580,170.

The suspect is believed to have gambled away the money from the sales.

Law enforcement questioned the man, referred to as “Officer DAR” in reports.

He faces charges of larceny and money laundering.

The charges include violations of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing Act 2006.

These relate to providing false information and avoiding transaction reporting rules.

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) has referred the case to the Public Prosecutions director.

Officer DAR’s gambling problems reportedly date back to when he was 18 or 19.

It is unclear what penalties he might face if convicted.
